At our campgound - mother catching kids on their tubes

Wednesday, May 31, drove to Bryson City, NC. It was about an hour and half drive. Again it was a very scenic drive. Rolling hills and mountains covered with trees. After seeing Colorado and seeing the Rockies, there are few rocks to see here, just tree covered mountains here. We arrived at the Deep Creek Tube Center & Campgrounds about noon-thirty. The campground rents inner tubes so you can float down the Deep Creek River, which runs down in back of the campgrounds or they will take you up into Great Smoky Mountain Nat. Park and let you float back down to the campgrounds. Yes, we are back on the edge of the Great Smoky Mountain Nat. Park, but this time we are on the south side, the North Carolina side. We have been to the park, so our goal here is to ride the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad. You can take the train from either the town of Dillsboro or Bryson City. We are doing the latter.

Thursday, June 1, the train takes a four and half hour, 44 mile round trip along the Tuckasegee River and stops for an hour lunch break at the Nantahala River Gorge. At the lunch break, you can get off the train and watch the rafters and kayakers make there way through the river rapids. It makes an interesting stop. You can also take the train up the river and take rafts and ride the rapids back, we did not do that. After the train returns to Bryson City there is also a model train layout you can pay to see. It was an "o" scale and I did not want to pay $9 to see that. We did our laundry at the laundrymat which was a block from the depot and while we were waiting on that I went and got a haircut. After that we took Sadie and went down to the creek at the campgrounds and watched some campers ride some mild rapids on inner tubes. We are heading for Chattanooga tomorrow.
