American Falls - Canada across the river

American Falls with lights on

Friday, August 18, was the official end of the Great Lakes Caravan. We left the campgrounds and headed for the Rainbow Bridge to cross to the U.S. side of Niagara Falls. The traffic was backed up and it took us about 15 to 20 minutes to reach the attendant. She looked at our drivers license asked us a couple questions and let us go. It was much easier to get into the U.S. than it was to get into Canada. That was just opposite of what I thought it would be. We drove into Niagara Falls, New York and then headed for the Niagara KOA at Grand Island, New York. The charge for one night at this KOA was $56. That is the highest we have every paid for one night at any campground any place. KOA's are usually higher priced than most other campgrounds, that is why I usually try to avoid them. As we got set up at our spot we discovered that this campground was right next-door to Fantasy Island Amusement Park. You could even enter the amusement park right from the campgrounds by catching the amusement park's train via a special gate. What a set-up. We were not going to the amusement park but that evening Carol and I went back to Niagara Falls, but this time on the American side. About 7:00 pm we headed for Goat Island, which is the island between the Canadian and the American Falls. There we could get up close to the falls and sense the awesome power of the falls. We took some pictures and waited until about 8:45 when they turned the lights on the falls. On Friday evenings they shoot off some fireworks but we found out they don't start until 10:00 pm and we decided to not to wait that long. We headed back to the campground.

Our original itinerary was to head to Nova Scotia and the east coast at this time. We have changed our plans. Before we left Kansas City the first week of July, Carol had gone to the doctor to have him look at her elbow that she broke last summer. He said some of her pain was due to the screws in her elbow were backing out from their original position. He said she will need to have some more surgery to correct that. Carol said how about doing the surgery late October or early November and he seemed OK with that. Well, the pain in Carol's elbow is getting worst so we have decided to for go our original plans and head back to Kansas City so that Carol and do the surgery earlier. Therefore, we are now heading back to K.C. via Forest City, Iowa. Yes, back to the Winnebago Service Center. We are still having problems with the rear-view monitor. It keeps blowing fuses. It works for about hour and a half and then blows the fuse. Saturday, August 19, was our wedding anniversary, we headed for Amherst, Ohio.
