One of the interestiing sights we passed was Salt Flat which had a rest stop where we stopped for lunch.
The spot is nothing but a couple of old buildings and a historical marker telling the story of the El Paso Salt War.
Here, for centuries, Mexicans and Apache Indians came to collect salt from an ancient lake bed. In the 1870s, a couple of white men from El Paso claimed the land, then demanded that the Mexican salt collectors pay them for the salt they had been harvesting free for generations. Hostilities broke out, and by the time the matter was resolved several men had been killed and the US and Mexico were on the brink of war.
