BACKGROUND
Here is an excerpt from the Lonely Planet - USA chapter ‘Los Angeles’:
Santa Monica is the belle by the beach, the poshest among LA’s seaside cities, hemmed in by luxe beachfront hotels and sprinkled with købe-burger restaurants and $100-T-shirt boutiques.
Kids love the venerable Santa Monica Pier where diversions include a quaint carousel, a solar-powered Ferris wheel and an aquarium with touch tanks. Smoking is forbidden almost everywhere, including the beach, outdoor restaurants and the Third Street Promenade.
KAPOORS ON THE ROAD
I didn’t really know about the Santa Monica Pier the last time I visited Los Angeles, despite the fact that I did visit the original Getty Villa. I remember hearing that a new museum was being built in the hills above the museum and always wanted to return.
After spending most of the day at the Getty Centre, and seeing my favourite painting, Van Gogh’s ‘Irises’ for a second spectacular time, we headed to the beach hoping to walk along the pier and watch the sun set. It was a great time of day to visit; the lowering sun intensified the colours of the Ferris wheel and everything for sale at the kiosks.
The whole time we were at the pier, I could hear the music from the video ringing in my ears. I had never heard the song before watching the video last summer, but now I’ll never forget it.
