Tuesday 12/14 – No surgery today. Got a phone call on the way in this morning, and since I’m such a klutz with my cellphone when I’m driving, I couldn’t get it answered, but saw it was the hospital calling. When I finally got into town somewhere that I could pull over I ended up dropping the phone on the floor. Finally got VM dialed and it was the nurse telling me that they needed me to sign the consent form before they could do surgery. This was about 6:50 and surgery scheduled for 7:30 am. I was only about 10 minutes from hospital so just went straight there. When I got there they said that Bob’s fever had risen and they didn’t know if they were going to do the surgery! His temp at 4 am was at 99, and then had risen to over 101. They started taking labs, cultures, etc., which took quite awhile. Everything looked okay except the temp. The Internal Medicine dr said eventually that as they weren’t finding any kind of infection that it might be due to the bleeding again (which prevented surgery last week). His temp came down to 100.7 by the time I left at 5:30 p.m. They did bring him out of his heavy sedation several times during the day, but he couldn’t talk with the tube in his throat. He responded to their commands (squeeze hand, wiggle toes, any pain, etc.), but kept looking at me with those eyes like “get this tube out of me”. After a bit he would get agitated and try to get his hands up and start shaking his head, wanting to pull the tube out so they would sedate him again. They said surgery was planned for tomorrow if all was okay, but haven’t heard yet what time (and it’s now 7:15 pm). Had to get poor Weebles out and doing his duty before 6:30, and he was sure ready to go back out again when I got home at 6. Ben had come to the hospital to be with me, but I sent him on to work when it looked like they weren’t going to be able to operate today. Judie (Bob’s sister) called and said she and Fran were on their way from Clarksville, Tn and would be here tomorrow afternoon. Hoping everything goes well for tomorrow.
