Another short trip to Willcox, AZ where we returned to the park we stayed in on a prior trip only to discover it has turned into a KOA owned by people out of Kansas. However, they are redoing the park and it is better than ever. This city is the home of Rex Allen, Sr. a movie and country western star and a museum of Marty Robbins. It is also the gateway to the Chiricahua Mountains 39 miles away. When here before, we drove out to this national monument only to find the road under construction and snowing at the Visitor's Center. A little disappointing then, but this time we had a beautiful warm blue sky filled day. What a spectacular place! So glad we went back. The Apaches called this area the Land of the Standing Up Rocks, The rock pinnacles loom over the roadway like guardians of the forest. There is an 8 mile drive to Massai Point where you have a 360 degree view of all below with amazing rock pinnacles, These rocks date back 27 million years ago from the eruption of the Turkey Creek Volcano. Absolutely stunning formations that change with the weather and climate changes. I was even able to take a small hike without my foot hurting!!!!
Upon returning from this monument we took Kansas Settlement Road to Bonita Bean Company. This company packages the best pinto beans in the country that are raised in the area. Stocked up and found out we can order these beans on line now. Thank goodness!
We again stopped at Big Tex to eat Texas BBQ again. This restaurant is in an old rail car. Had ribs and brisket and of course pinto beans which are the best we've ever had. Another great eating place.
