We had heard that Wanaka was like an 'up and coming' Queenstown, primarily due to the rise in the number of adrenaline sports being offered in the area. We thought it had to be worth a look.
The town in located on a gorgeous lake with mountains all around (very much like Queenstown) and we were lucky enough to enjoy it in the sunshine. We arrived on a Sunday morning and couldn't resist heading out to the local ale house for pie & mash accompanied by the local brew. It was a great start and we grew to really like the place.
We spent our time taking walks and cycling around the lake on mountain bikes. After 4 hours in the saddle we were rather sore and achy! It was worth it to be able to take in the fabulous scenery though.
We had seen an advert for a company called 'Frogz have more fun' which offered 'river sledging'. This involved donning wetsuits and taking to the 'roaring meg' river on plastic sledges and riding the rapids. We couldn't resist it so on our final day we gave it a try. It wasn't as extreme as we had expected but was still good fun. Each trip took around 45 minutes and involved riding 'rollercoaster' and 'maneater' waves as well as taking a spin when caught in whirlpools. Certainly beats a day in the office!
