Next stop was Wanaka and the weather improved dramatically. We booked into a campervan park to avail of the facilities most importantly of course "the dump station"! An amusing name perhaps, but not such an amusing job! Campervan parks are really clean and very well run in New Zealand and this one even had a hot tub for us to soak in! The campervan park was in the Mt. Aspiring National Park and had lovely views of Lake Wanaka and the surrounding countryside.
Wanaka is an alternative to the "adrenaline capital" of Queenstown but has retained its small town feel. After making lots of enquiries and touring the surrounding area (including "Dublin Bay"!) in search of windsurfing, David reluctantly gave up on the idea! However, our adrenaline rush came the following day as we found ourselves diving out of a cessna at 15,000 ft over Lake Wanaka. With a whopping 60 seconds of freefall at a speed of 200 kph, the adrenalin was really pumping! Once the shoot opened we were able to appreciate the most breathtaking views of the mountains, glaciers, rivers and lakes of Mount Aspiring National Park which were pointed out to us by our tandem skydiver. As if we'll ever forget the thrill.... but just in case we got the whole experience on video and webcam!
