Bats at Carlsbad Caverns

This evening we all went to the Bat Program at Carlsbad Caverns. We had dinner around 5:30 then headed out the door. The program started at 7:00 at the Natural Entrance Outdoor Auditorium. The ranger talked to the group about bats for around 45 minutes. She said she expected there to be quite a few of them tonight because we had had poor weather the past couple nights. Normally the numbers are smaller around this time of year because they are still migrating north from Mexico. In the summers there are up to 500,000 bats that fly out of the cave at dusk. It looks like a black cloud coming out of the entrance.

We did see some bats but not as many as we had hoped. We may go back another night. We'll see what the rest of the week brings. We would like to get into the downtown part of Carlsbad one evening just to look around and check things out. Jonathan would like to swim again sometime.

Tomorrow, Jonathan and I are planning on driving to Guadalupe Mountain National Park to check things out. It's about 50 miles from here so we'll make a full day of it.
