Palenque ruins

Time to say Goodbye to Guatemala and move on to Mexico. After a fairly long bus journey to the border, another bus took us on to San Cristobal de las Casas for a short overnight stop, then on to Palenque. The ruins here are one of Mexico's most important Maya sites. The site itself is apparently quite large, but only a fairly compact central area has been excavated, which makes it very easy to wander around. The buildings here, although not as tall as at Tikal, are more accessible, and it was fascinating to be able to stroll in and around the central palace and picture what might have been going on here 2000 years ago.
