We took Hwy 87 to I-10 to Bypass 1604 in San Antonio to US 87 to State 119 to US 183 to US 50 into what is actually Raisin, TX about 12 miles SW of Victoria. We stayed at Victoria Colette KOA where we have stayed before. This is a new park and absolutely beautiful. Very friendly people here.
We came to this area to drive out to the Gulf about 50 miles away to see first hand the damage from Hurricane Harvey. It is hard to explain the devastation and damage still six months later. So many homes and businesses destroyed or damaged and the clean up has only begun with so much to do. We did find debris along side the fence lines for miles. One bright spot is the restaurant that we discovered on our last trip here and right on the water, is bravely back open with a limited facility.
We once again visited the Aransas Natural Wildlife Refuge and were rewarded with a view of at least 3 whooping cranes and large white egret. On the trip back we saw several large herds (if that's what they are called) of deer. Never have we seen so many deer together before. Weather was decent except the wind blew ferociously.
Another day we drove out to Palacious, another city on the Gulf. We didn't see much damage here, but discovered a place that we had eaten at here was closed. Very disappointing as they had excellent boiled shrimp. There is a large fleet of shrimp boats here, but they all appeared to be in that day and not out catching the delicious gulf shrimp.
Attempted to find the Farmer's Market in Victoria on Saturday, but directions were poor and we never did find it. Kind of a drizzly day today, Saturday, so just catching up on "stuff" like reclining!!!!!
