Jan 19, 2019 - Sea day
1/19/19 Sea day It was 75 and sunny this morning. I went to the gym first thing. This is the final day of the first cruise, with most people getting off the boat tomorrow morning. I headed up to the Serenity Deck (15) early to get some sun before it got too hot. After just a few minutes, the clouds rolled in and then it started raining. It lasted less than 30 minutes. While waiting it out, I spoke with some nice people from Michigan. Then after a while, I laid back down. A few minutes later, crew came up and said they were closing the...

Jan 19, 2019 - Jan 18-19 Sailing the Caribean
Friday, January 18 Sailing away today! We took the shuttle from the hotel to the huge cruise port—there were several large ships in port. The embarkation was speedy—handed off our bags, went through a short line to have passports checked and get our on-board card, got snapped by the photographer, and then got on the ship and were able to go directly to our room (although the luggage came a few hours later). We settled in, read the program for the day, and then set off to explore the ship. We stopped at the service desk and figured out how...

Jan 18, 2019 - Sea day
1/18/19 Sea day Today was a nice, relaxing sea day. The sun shone all day long and it was about 75 degrees. I went to the gym first thing and later did a lot of walking to help stave away some weight gain… We did the hot tub a few times, and I even sat in the water at the edge of the pool. It was very busy, so it was enough just to sit and enjoy it. As usual, we did some reading. We had coupons for a free drink if we ate lunch in the dining room. Jim had a “Kiss on the lips” tropical drink and I had the mudslide. I had the Huevo...

Jan 17, 2019 - Nassau, Bahamas
1/17/19 Nassau It was 72 degrees and sunny first thing this am and probably a few degrees warmer by noon. This afternoon the clouds rolled in and the wind syarted blowing, so it felt chilly. There were 2 other ships in port, the Carnival Elation, which was quite a bit smaller than ours, and a Celebrity Cruise Ship. This is our last port, with 2 sea days before we get back to New Orleans on Sunday. It has been 39 years since we were in Nassau, so it had obviously changed immensely. We spent time this morning walking around and shopping....

Jan 16, 2019 - Freeport, Bahamas
1/16/19 Freeport, Bahamas It was 68 this morning, but warmed up into the low to mid 70's, so was a very pleasant day. The port today was located far from everything except a little shopping plaza right off the pier. There were 3 ships in port today, ours, Carnival Liberty, and a Costa ship. We took the Garden of the Groves tour. Our bus driver, Jason, provided awesome information about Freeport, Port Lucaya, and the Bahamas. Gas here runs about 4.30 per gallon, so most people drive small fuel efficient cars. All cars are imported mostly...

Guadeloupe is an insular region of France located in the Leeward Islands, part of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean. We are visiting the island of Terre-de-Haut which I will describe in more detail in a bit. Administratively, Guadeloupe is an overseas region consisting of a single overseas department. With a land area of 629 square miles and an estimated population of 400,132, it is the largest and most populous European Union territory in North America. Guadeloupe, like the other overseas departments, is an integral part of France. As a...

Nov 12, 2018 - Saint Barthélemy (St Barts)
Saint Barthélemy, officially the Territorial collectivity of Saint-Barthélemy, called Ouanalao by the indigenous people, is an overseas collectivity of France in the West Indies. Often abbreviated to St-Barth in French, and St. Barths or St. Barts in English, the island lies about 22 miles southeast of St. Martin and north of St. Kitts. Puerto Rico is 150 miles to the west in the Greater Antilles. French is their primary language and they use Euros as their currency. The island is extremely small with next to nothing to do for tourist...

Nov 11, 2018 - a familiar stop
The well traveled tend to look down their noses at visiting the Bahamas. They are too close to the US, they are not pretty, little remains of their colonial heritage. If you're going to the Caribbean, better to visit the Virgin Islands for scenery, Curaçao for European culture, Bonaire for diving, Trinidad for their steel drums. Nevertheless the Bahamas have a special place in our hearts. We took our first cruise here and were set on a path we continue to walk with delight. We once spent a frenetic New Years' Eve at the Junkanoo festivities...

Nov 9, 2018 - Bahamas
Our first stop was the island of Bimini. Bimini is the westernmost district of the Bahamas and comprises a chain of islands located about 50 miles east of Miami. Bimini is the closest point in the Bahamas to the mainland United States and approximately 130 miles west-northwest of Nassau. The population is 1,988 as of the 2010 census. Its main settlement is Alice Town and a collection of shops, restaurants, and bars on a road known as "The King's Highway". The second major road is called Queens Highway and runs almost the length of the...
