Apr 16, 2015 - Approaching the end of our time in the Bahamas

The plans we mentioned at the end of the last posting changed somewhat, but not radically. We spent two days in Marsh Harbour, two days at Great Guana, three days at Manjack Cay and are now at Green Turtle Cay. When we left Hope Town, we sailed to Marsh Harbour and anchored. Knot-Ha-Gan (Marianne and Paul) had also departed Hope Town and were already anchored. J&B anchored near us after they finished enjoying sailing a longer course to Marsh Harbour just for the fun of it. Fred and I had read autobiographical books, “Out Island Doctor” and...

May 6, 2013 - Green Turtle Cay, Bahamas - Again

After arriving in Green Turtle Cay, staying at the Leeward Yacht Club on Black Sound, we settle in with several other boaters that came here as well, anticipating that the weather is going to settle down in a week to allow us to cross over the Atlantic back to FLA. We chose to be here to wait versus other places since it is such a neat island and the places west of here are inhabited, except for one remote island that is very depressed and another that is way too expensive for us. Also, Green Turtle has their annual Heritage Days...

Mar 22, 2013 - Lake Worth, FL to Green Turtle Cay, Bahamas

3/17: West End Bahamas: Well, we made it. Weather was as forecasted, but it was tougher than we expected. The winds were on our beam (SE at 15 kts) most of the way, so we rolled our way over. It took us 10:15 hours to get there. Things went slow and we tacked back and forth some to reduce the beam. Mileage-wise, we traveled only 61 miles, which is about right. As we entered the Gulf stream, we picked up speed, but with the tacking we had to do to reduce the rough ride, we were not able to take full advantage of the extra speed the stream...

May 2, 2012 - Green Turtle Cay to Great Sale Cay

When we were finally able to leave Green Turtle, we had a two day trek back across the Bahama Bank to West End and another day across the Gulf Stream. We spent the night on the hook at Great Sale again because it’s about half way between GT Cay and West End. As we left Great Sale, we attempted a jump-start at sea, but before I can tell you about that, I have to give you the back story. When we were stuck at Spanish Cay, there were these 3 guys on a sailboat that we got to know. One, the owner of the boat and a live aboard, is a carpet...

Apr 25, 2012 - Still at Green Turtle Cay

Just by luck, Wednesday night is band night at the Green Turtle Club by the marina. For our last night we got to see what the locals consider the best band on the island, “The Gully Roosters.” At first I had trouble remembering that name, then I did it by word association. You should have seen the look on some locals’ faces when I called them the “Ditch Chickens.” They weren’t bad and we enjoyed some real Bahamian music. They say they have Soca, Calypso, and Reggae here, but most of it sounds like just Soca. During the day driving around...

Apr 24, 2012 - Spanish Cay to Green Turtle Cay

FINALLY we can go…it’s still blowing 15 to 20, but we’re out of there, and we had an interesting and enjoyable day for my birthday, probably the best one since the beginning of the trip. That’s mostly because we made it to the Green Turtle Club on…wait for it…Green Turtle Cay. It’s a really nice place, but first I have to tell you about the Coast Guard incident. A few miles from the harbor entrance to Green Turtle, a large rubber boat came right at us. We realized fairly quickly that it was the Bahamian Coast Guard, but I think their boat...

Dec 27, 2008 - Crossing to the Bahamas

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all. We are safe and sound and finally found some internet. We departed from Lake Worth Inlet,Palm Beach FL on Saturday Dec,20th at 0630 hrs. Our first waypoint was just south of Memmory Rock which is 51 miles across the Gulf Stream and that would put us on the Bahamas Bank, no land in sight. We planned the crossing well, listening to weather forcasters on the SSB radio and chatting with all the other cruisers and reading books beforehand. It was a day for trawlers, less than 5 knots and a flat...

Apr 29, 2008 - We are in Green Turtle

We are here in Green Turtle with WERPLAYIN. What a lovely harbor. Last night was Deb's birthday so we ate at the Jolly Roger restaurant here at the Bluff House Marina. We also visted with BOFIX onboard WERPLAYIN...had a lovely evening. We are up this morning waiting for the cold front that is coming early this afternoon. We have had a few showers and a water spout so far. Plans are to say goodbye to WERPLAYIN and head north to Great Sale Cay and then cross the gulf stream on Thursday. The burning question is whether we go to Fort Pierce,...

Mar 8, 2007 - Marsh Harbor to Green Turtle Cay, Bahamas

2/26 Elbow Cay UPDATED 2/28 After running Miss L 6 miles yesterday to a mini-Looper get together at Boat Harbor, we came here today, only 3 miles to this isle. Yesterday was a blast. We had over a dozen boats there doing a pot luck, giving speeches, playing games, in which during the tug-o-war, the rope broke sending 24 of us to our butts. Early today, most of us boated to a place called Tahitti beach to snorkle, look for shells and hang out at an anchorage near here. Then we dingyed to a local place for a late lunch. We decided to stay...
