Oct 6, 2015 - Xiamen, China

Pete had a nice visit in Xiamen with a group of his friends. They visited the beach and some other tourist sites and got something to eat while they were off the ship, which is a nice change. Xiamen has a subtropical climate and is just across a strait from Taiwan. He sent a bunch of pictures, including a few from activities on the ship over the past couple of days.

Pete checked in from Xiamen and everything was going well. He has been busy with shows, rehearsals, and parades, as usual, but was having some fun with some of his shipmates as well. His voice still sounds froggy from his cold but he said he is feeling fine.

Peter called from Xiamen and things were going well. It was early in the morning there when he called so he hadn't made any plans for the day except for the couple of shows that were already scheduled for the evening. They have a new production show cast on the ship now (singers and dancers), preparing for their debut in a couple of days so there have been extra technical rehearsals to get those folks up to speed before they start performing for the guests. He said the production performers are almost all from Australia, England, and the...

Pete checked in from Xiamen and everything was going well. Actually, Pete's calls recently have mostly revolved around the continuing health problems of his grandmother in Indianapolis, rather than about any news he might have from the ship. His responsibilities on the ship have been about the same as usual - safety drills, production shows, rehearsals, etc. He's getting along well with Jun, his instruments are working well, and he is feeling good.

Pete called from Xiamen and everything is going just fine. We are having a little difficulty getting back into the swing of keeping track of his 12 hour time difference and missed his calls several times before we actually got to hear his voice. The orchestra ended up playing a headliner show with very little notice when it was discovered that the comedian who had been hired to entertain the guests only spoke Mandarin Chinese, rather than Cantonese or English, which are the languages of almost all of the passengers on the ship this time....

Sep 30, 2014 - Xiamen, China

Pete called from Xiamen and everything was going well, including the weather, which was pretty warm with temperatures in the low 90's. He said that he and some of his friends had visited Disneyland when they were in Hong Kong and did not see anything of the democracy demonstrations, which he said were pretty localized to an area similar to our Wall Street in New York. Unfortunately, a number of the Voyager employees lost their day in port, having to cover duties for local employees in Hong Kong who did not appear for work with the Port...

Pete checked in today. It was his first visit to Xiamen but, because it was actually a secondary turn-around port for the Chinese guests on the ship, it was a busy day and he did not get off the ship. He said he and some of his friends are looking forward to going to Jeju on Thursday for their last time this season.

Waccy races again with the same manic driver as Sunday, this time back from Yong'an to Xiamen. The highlight of the trip was, when playing stock-car races through the city centre of Xiamen a bus cut us up and the manic drivers reaction to indicate that there were some bad drivers in the world had us speechless with disbelief.

Oct 20 - Yawn, long day on the train. 7 hours on the milk run from Shanghai to Xiamen. Maybe the plane would have been better, did not even think about it at the time. It's amazing how you can spend 7 hours on a train going 200KM/H and every time you look out the window you see buildings of some sort. How do you know when one city ends and another starts. What is in all those factories? Is it something I have used before? Maybe? I will never know. Oct 21 - Went by ferry today to the small tourist island of Gulang-yu. It is a national park...

Mar 9, 2010 - Xiamen, China March 9, 2010

Xiamen, where in China is that? That is the question that so many of us asked (had to be on the coast of China!). As it turns out, Xiamen is a "new" city that is centered around Commercial/Industrial progress AND focused on easy port exportation of many of China's products. We arrive in the early morning to a bustling, growing city that looked like a combination of Shanghai and growing cities in Indonesia. Our dock space was even located up river to a new (still under construction) Port Terminal building from the "old" dock location in an...
