Nov 30, 2015 - Sleep? What an interesting concept....

Sleep? What an interesting concept.... Buenos Noches, Senors y Senoras! We have arrived in Costa Rica in good spirits and totally sleep deprived. A quick questionnaire on sleep: Q. Sleep is (choose one): a. Over-rated. You'll sleep when you're dead. b. Contra-indicated on red eye flights from Edmonton to Toronto. c. Most "fun" when seated next to a howling 1 year old named Neo (seriously - that's his name - like in The Matrix!) squirming in his mommy's arms for the 5 hours flight from Toronto to San Jose (Only Mikey gets to choose...

Jan 6, 2015 - Santa Ana - San Jose

Arrived in San Jose, CR. Checked into Hotel Posada Canal Grande $39 overlooking city. Spent the day at the pool watching the clouds blow by and recouping from our overnight flight. Explored the local neighborhood shops and ate at the Oveja Negra (black sheep) $5 a small plate. Enjoyed a great fruit smoothie with basil and had a couple Imperial beers as the sun went down. Made a reservation tomorrow for our arrival in Los Chiles. Tried to decypher the bus routes for our 5 hr ride to the nicaraguan border manana.

Nov 3, 2014 - Tweede week in Maximo Nivel.

Apr 19, 2014 - Costa Rica - Day 9

On our way out of the hotel, on that winding dirt road, we pulled over at a place known to have a pair of nesting quetzals. We all waited, looking at the nesting hole in the tree and around the area. Enrique found the male and it flew to a vine right in front of us! I was inside the bus at the time, getting some imodium for a hurting friend and missed the opportunity! It had a bee in its beak and brought it inside the hole! I couldn't get positioned to get a picture of it there either! But Cindy, our resident professional photographer and...

Apr 17, 2014 - Costa Rica Day 8 - Our Last Full Day

Our final full day began with a trip to the Monteverde Butterfly Garden. This butterfly garden is different from most in that it has 4 separate gardens, each representing a different Costa Rican habitat, from hot lowlands to high altitude cloud forests. It also features other less popular insects such as beetles and tarantulas! One of the most interesting is the display of an active leaf-cutter ant colony which gave us a window into a world normally hidden from view. These tiny ants have one of the most complex social structures in the...

Living Our Dream

Apr 10, 2014 - Costa Rica - Day 1

After getting up at 2 a.m., driving to the airport in Ft. Walton Beach, changing planes in Atlanta, we finally arrived in San Jose somewhere around noon Costa Rica time. Easy flights & easy entry through customs. The Road Scholar escort was waiting for us to bring us to the Balmoral Hotel right in the middle of downtown San Jose. We got to ride with another couple who had been on the same flight with us. Had a good mid afternoon lunch in the hotel dining room & then took a walk with around in the downtown area with some others from the...

Living Our Dream

Apr 7, 2014 - La Fortuna to San Jose

Lunch time departure today for a bus ride around 3 and a half hours to the capital of Costa Rica - San Jose. Went for a bit of a walk around the streets before returning to our hotel. This evening our group had our final dinner together, as 8 out of 14 are leaving us here. The rest of us will be joined by a new group on our way to Panama. After dinner a group of us headed out to a club. It was pretty quiet when we arrived at 9pm (Monday night) but the crowd started to grow and when a live band came on the place was rocking. Excellent band...

Feb 18, 2014 - Return to San Jose

We begin our last day with a hike thru Manuel Antonio National Park. Another lush, plant and animal filled area. But this one also borders the Pacific Ocean so has some spectacular water views. As we leave the area for lunch we learn we have another surprise after lunch, a second aerial tram ride thru the rainforest. We did not see a lot, a few birds, too small and off in the distance to photograph well. We did see several waterfalls though. Then the ride back to San Jose. We have a farewell dinner and dance. Even Jim gets up to learn...

Feb 17, 2014 - San Jose

Well I got up early and caught the 5am bus to San Jose. We left promptly at 507, which if you remember from another post is how late I was when I missed the bus last time. Ironic. The trip was uneventful and I landed in San Jose. I was fully expecting to take a flight to Managua in the morning so I went and took a cab closer to the airport for a 4am wake up again. Well I was having some trouble with the trip I thought I'd booked and they don't have a flight on Tuesdays so I'd have to wait until Wednesday. Well that irritated me so I decided...

Travels with Mike

Feb 14, 2014 - Final day in Costa Rica

Up early to have a quick breakfast and then time to wonder if we will be forced to stay longer, due to the blizzard-type conditions that are occuring on the east coast. Our energetic and gracious tour guide, got up early to made sure we were on our way and off to the airport. We made our flight to JFK and then onto Boston with just a slight delay so we managed to slip back home, inbetween storms. We all had a wonderful time in Costa Rica and have great memories of these past 18 days. We are thankful to IDEXX Laboratories for giving Dale...
