Apr 10, 2014 - Costa Rica - Day 1

After getting up at 2 a.m., driving to the airport in Ft. Walton Beach, changing planes in Atlanta, we finally arrived in San Jose somewhere around noon Costa Rica time. Easy flights & easy entry through customs. The Road Scholar escort was waiting for us to bring us to the Balmoral Hotel right in the middle of downtown San Jose. We got to ride with another couple who had been on the same flight with us. Had a good mid afternoon lunch in the hotel dining room & then took a walk with around in the downtown area with some others from the...

Living Our Dream

Apr 7, 2014 - La Fortuna to San Jose

Lunch time departure today for a bus ride around 3 and a half hours to the capital of Costa Rica - San Jose. Went for a bit of a walk around the streets before returning to our hotel. This evening our group had our final dinner together, as 8 out of 14 are leaving us here. The rest of us will be joined by a new group on our way to Panama. After dinner a group of us headed out to a club. It was pretty quiet when we arrived at 9pm (Monday night) but the crowd started to grow and when a live band came on the place was rocking. Excellent band...

Feb 18, 2014 - Return to San Jose

We begin our last day with a hike thru Manuel Antonio National Park. Another lush, plant and animal filled area. But this one also borders the Pacific Ocean so has some spectacular water views. As we leave the area for lunch we learn we have another surprise after lunch, a second aerial tram ride thru the rainforest. We did not see a lot, a few birds, too small and off in the distance to photograph well. We did see several waterfalls though. Then the ride back to San Jose. We have a farewell dinner and dance. Even Jim gets up to learn...

Feb 17, 2014 - San Jose

Well I got up early and caught the 5am bus to San Jose. We left promptly at 507, which if you remember from another post is how late I was when I missed the bus last time. Ironic. The trip was uneventful and I landed in San Jose. I was fully expecting to take a flight to Managua in the morning so I went and took a cab closer to the airport for a 4am wake up again. Well I was having some trouble with the trip I thought I'd booked and they don't have a flight on Tuesdays so I'd have to wait until Wednesday. Well that irritated me so I decided...

Feb 14, 2014 - Final day in Costa Rica

Up early to have a quick breakfast and then time to wonder if we will be forced to stay longer, due to the blizzard-type conditions that are occuring on the east coast. Our energetic and gracious tour guide, got up early to made sure we were on our way and off to the airport. We made our flight to JFK and then onto Boston with just a slight delay so we managed to slip back home, inbetween storms. We all had a wonderful time in Costa Rica and have great memories of these past 18 days. We are thankful to IDEXX Laboratories for giving Dale...

Feb 11, 2014 - Off to Costa Rica

Up early and off to the airport. Won't really be doing much today besides travel, immigration, customs, and getting to the hotel. From there we'll see what we can do and have time for. Really no time to do much of anything. At the airport in San Jose we met 3 other couples who are also on the same trip. All from Florida, no one knows one another so after arriving at the hotel we just went for drinks and got to know one another. Then it was dinner and our Orientation meeting. From our hotel we could see the new Costa Rican National Futbol...

Feb 3, 2014 - San Jose

Well it seems in my attempt to make an accurate map of my travels I've deleted an entry. I made some incredible friends in Tamarindo but it's time to move on. Craig is driving me to the little airport and then I'll fly to San Jose and then to Puerto Jimenez. I've invited Craig and Carla to come and visit me in Nicaragua since they have to leave the country for a few days. If you're not a citizen then you're required to leave the counrty every 90 days and this is called the 'border run'. Craig and Carla have lived in Costa Rica for 6 years...

Jan 28, 2014 - First day of our Costa Rican Adventure

Good day to all: It was smooth sailing out of Boston to San Jose Costa Rica (via JFK) on Tuesday and a joy to looking forward to getting out of the cold! One of our seat mates was also an Earthwatch volunteer who has was heading to Costa Rica for the dolphin project which sounds exciting also. There are so many wonderful experiences that are available with Earthwatch so another thing got added to our bucket list. We were a bit anxious about getting out of the airport and to our hotel at night but it all went smoothly with the help of so...

Jul 3, 2013 - Free fall flow, river flow….

On and on it goes Breathe under water 'till the end Free fall flow, river flow On and on it goes Breathe under water 'till the end…. Costa Rica! Pura Vida! I've spent the last month exploring this beautiful country. It started out slow, and I've got to be honest, I wasn't really feeling it to begin with, but I finally got off the beaten path and found the road less traveled and wow, what an incredible journey. Now to be fair, I was coming off the high of Ecuador, and I was lazy, and had booked myself in to follow the mainstream Gringo...

Apr 30, 2013 - San José

@@@@@@@ KAPOORS ON THE ROAD The drive back from the beach was uneventful, but the weather was a little sunnier and we were able to see more of the surrounding scenery off in the distance. It was great to get back to the guesthouse and see Darryle and his housekeeper Maria once again. We really had only one day to spend in San José, and chose to just relax and work on posting the photos that I had taken while at the beach on my travel journal. We picked up some wine and spent the evening chatting with another guest who was staying at the...

Apr 25, 2013 - San José, Costa Rica

@@@@@@@ BACKGROUND The National Geographic Traveler describes San José in this way: Perched among a crescent of mountains, San José enjoys an enviable setting in the heart of the Meseta Central at 1,150m (3,773ft). The compact city of 300,000 enjoys what National Geographic dubbed one of the three best climates in the world, with temperatures that hover around 21C (70F) daily year-round. San José clings to a provincial feel despite sprawling suburbs that now claim 1.3 million residents – one-third of the nation’s total. San José can never...
