Mar 9, 2012 - Final Thoughts

The pictures have been difficult to upload on to this site, so until that problem is resolved please feel free to view all the photos from the trip by "liking" Venture Costa Rica on Facebook. Billy, Fabrisio, and Fabrisio's wife (Luna), were kind enough to document the entire trip for us. If you do not have Facebook, feel free to email me and I will send you some of the best shots when we return to the states. To those of you who helped to make this trip possible... Every one on the trip enjoyed a once in a lifetime experience here in Costa...

Mar 9, 2012 - Day Six

Our final full day in Costa Rica. The morning started with some free time for the girls. Each one decided to pass the time with a trip to the market, one last look at the beach, or luxuriating by the pool. After packing up the rooms, everyone loaded the bus for the return trip to San Jose. We returned to our original hotel and had a couple hours before getting on the bus again to head to Cartago for our second match of the trip. We got to experience some pretty crazy Costa Rican traffic, and therefore driving, on the way to the field, but...

Mar 5, 2012 - Day Two

Hello All! Sorry it has been so long since I have been able to update the blog. I was having issues logging on to the website, but now we are back! Day two consisted of an early morning wake up call and two different trips for the team. The majority of the team headed towards the Caribbean Coast to go white water rafting on the Pacuare River. This site is one of the top rafting spots in the world and the world championships were held there last year. Unfortunately, an unexpected heavy rain during dry season created a dangerous situation and...

Mar 4, 2012 - Day One

BUENAS!!! We are all settled here in San Jose, so we thought it was time to add the first update. The trip started out a little rocky with a turbulent flight from Dulles to San Salvador, El Salvador, but as soon as we flew over the beautiful country of Costa Rica things started to turn around for us. We got to our hotel around dinner time, ate a fantastic meal, and got ready for the week's events. Our first full day in San Jose was full of excitement. We started the day with a hike around one of the most active volcanoes in Costa Rica at...

Feb 29, 2012 - Day 7 of Region 1 ODP trip to Costa Rica

The mood in camp this morning was a bit dull due to the crushing defeat we experienced last night. However, there were still a few things to attend to after our breakfast, so the coaching staff couldn't wait to get the girls on the training ground. We had a very good session leading up to our last game. We focused on playing a quicker final pass in the final third of the field using limited touches. I thought the girls got a good handle of the concept. As the session went along they got better and better. Once the session was over we headed...

Feb 28, 2012 - Day 6 of Region 1 ODP trip to Costa Rica

Once we were done with our breakfast we headed to a tour of the national stadium. This facility was magnificent. It was built by the Chinese. The cost to build it was in excess of 115 million. We were informed that one of their workers was killed by a freak accident as the facility was completed. There is an underground field but we didn't get a chance to see it. Once the tour was completed we went to our training session and worked on the execution of various technical progression with the ball. This was followed by some set pieces and a...

Feb 27, 2012 - Day 5 of Region 1 ODP trip to Costa Rica

Today was set up for all the regional ODP teams to relax and have a bit of fun. It started with us visiting the alligator sanctuary. I must admit I was a little nervous for the players and myself as we took pictures of the alligators looking over a railing below waist height. There were cars and trucks whizzing by us on this very busy bridge. This certainly added to the tension ☺. There was a parent with a little girl walking by us. I kept telling myself it’s not the place to have your kids. Once we left it was off to some zip lining. It...

Feb 26, 2012 - Day 4 of Region 1 ODP trip to Costa Rica

We started the day knowing we were sitting in 5th place. As a result today's game could have been a make or break game. The girls seemed ready as we came out of our team meeting. I was very eager to see how they were going to respond to everything they had been through since our last game. We decided to make a few changes to our line-up while maintaining our team system from the previous match. We got to the game a little earlier today compared to yesterday. I could tell the girls were ready. They wanted to play the game right away as...

Feb 26, 2012 - Day 3 of Region 1 ODP trip to Costa Rica

The day we were all waiting for was finally here and the girls were quite excited. We had our breakfast then it was off to our meeting. We had to wait to use our room since Region IV's meeting went over. Once there, we discussed the game plan and encourage them to focus on the things we had control over. The line up was given and we were off to the game. The facility at this site was impressive. It's the home of the Costa Rican Soccer Federation. There was a coaching education session going on when we got there as well. Our opponent on this...

Feb 24, 2012 - Day 2 of Region 1 ODP trip to Costa Rica

The players had an opportunity to sleep in a little today. However, once our breakfast was over both Region I and II met for our orientation. It was a lot of fun because we all learned quite a bit about Costa Rica. Each time the girls answered correctly they were given a gift. Once we were done, it was off to our first of two training sessions. I was very eager to be a part of this session because I have been learning on the job. I am finding out how different it is to prepare a team for an international tournament as oppose to playing...

Feb 24, 2012 - Day 1 of Region 1 ODP trip to Costa Rica

We left the hotel in Newark at 4:30am to head to the airport. Due to my time of arrival and knowing we had to leave this early, I decided to stay up late so that I would be tired on the plane. There were 12 of us at the hotel including coaches and players. The plan was to meet the other players at the airport. Our check went smoothly. So it was off to our San Jose. I got my sleep in on the plane so that was good. Overall our flight was great. The landing was a little scary. However, for the most part a great trip for the kids. Once we got...
