Feb 10, 2012 - leppoisaa elostelua

Feb 9, 2012 - Hel-Laos 4000 Island

Hello all, We are now in Laos and having a great time. We had a real struggle to get a guesthouse on Don Det as it's very popular but after great persistence of just over an hour we found a nice bungalow and a couple of well deserved beers. We are staying on Don Det island in the 4000 islands of the Laos Mekong. It's so stunning here our bungalow is right on the river, what a view first thing in the morning as you eat breakfast or swing in your hammock. On our first day we visited by bike (yes more) waterfalls . These were different, it's...

Asian Adventure 2011

So we went from Pakse to 4,000 islands one island in particular Don Det we knew there was not ATm or bank on the island so we needed to get sorted for cash whcih meant a motor taxi to a western union. After that we got the boat across and had to trek in the swealtering heat acorss rice fields until we found the spot where we wanted to stay Sunset view. We got a nice hut over looking the Mekong River. Don det was a cool place to chill out for a few days with a small community of westerners living on the island. God know what they do all day...

Jan 22, 2012 - Don Det, 4000 Islands ** Laos blog **

So on to Laos. Or as it is often referred to: “LaosCambodiaVietnam”. Heading across the land border with North Thailand, we jumped aboard the 2-day boat to Luang Prabang. The pace of the journey proved a good introduction to the extravagantly languid pace of life and sharing our special journey with a flotilla of tourist boats packed to the rafters, was an introduction to the heavily trodden backpacker circuit – which was to continue through to Cambodia. Two days on the Mekong river was pretty picturesque aping scenes not unlike those we...

Jun 7, 2011 - The Kong Lor Caves

The next two days were spent on buses for around 6 hours, then finding a room and getting dinner in Savannakhet and Tha Kheak on our way up Laos. On the third day we traveled to Ban Khoum Kham.As we traveled into cantral Laos the secenery got amazing! Winding up in the mountains and between huge karsts. The town itself lies in a plateau in between the hills. We found a nice guesthouse and headed out to what seemed the only restaurant there! Possiby could have been another, but the woman who looked like the cook took one look at us and told...

Fields of gold

May 25, 2011 - Don Det

We got a bus from Kampong Cham to The four thousand island in loas. Crossing the border was easy and we got to Don det by catching a thin long boat from the mainland. We spent the first day having a look around and chilling in a couple of bars before dinner. We headed to the busiest bar for the evening and enjoyed a few buckets!! The next day was spent doing much the same, as was all the time there! The island is very relaxed. You could hire bikes ar kayaks but we decided not to. Instead we spent our time chilling in the river and on the...

Apr 11, 2011 - 4000 islands

From Vang Vieng we took a 3hr minibus to Vientienne and from there we got a sleeper bus overnight down to The 4000 Islands which are a collection of small islands in the Mekong River, in the far south of Laos. The sleeper bus was definatly an experience i wont forget.... we had small bed between 2 of us. We were travelling in a group of 6, and were on the top level of the double decker right at the back... Laos does NOT do suspension and doesnt do slowing down for corners so we spent half of the ride in the air! We also had an old guy on...

Mar 19, 2011 - Laos - Don Det

Hello again, Right, last post for this trio – and our first from Laos. We've only been here a few days and haven't seen too much, so can't really form an impression just yet. We spent our first two days mostly horizontal (every beach bungalow has hammocks) and quickly acclimatised to the extremely laid-back pace of island life on Don Det. It's a tiny place in a beautiful area of the Mekong river called Si Phan Don, or 4000 Islands, where fishermen putter by and that's about as frenetic as it gets. The sunsets are pretty special, but our...

Steven and I have spent a lovely day relaxing in Ubon, having nice smoothies at UBake, the nice bakery around the corner from where we live then took a songteaw to Wat Ban Na Muang, an amazing temple with three massive elephants heads! we had a good look around there and a man handed me a baby and took photos, very strange! tonight we are going for dinner in the expat cafe! Feb 25, 2009 - Don Det

Hey guys, The 4000 Islands are beautiful!!! We were staying on the paradisiacal island Don Det. To get there it’s a little bit hard, certainly if you take the local transportation as us. You have tourist mini busses going as well but we preferred to stay with the locals. It was a long and dusty trip. But the reward the nature gave us, arriving on the spot, made us forget immediately the hassle. I fell in love with the tree on the other side of our bungalow. The different green colors and shapes of the trees are stunning. You have the...
