Mountains as Far as the Eye Can See Day 144 It’s time to leave Te Anau and head north east to the self-styled ‘adventure capital of the world’, Queenstown. However, before we set off on the long drive, we decide we would like to visit the bird sanctuary which is next to the lake and has bird feeding at 10.30am. Although free the sanctuary relies on donations to keep open so by the information board at the entrance is a donations box for gold coloured coins. Jul 30, 2017 - Trying our hand at Skiing

After a long drive down to near Wanaka, we stayed in a lovely Airbnb before getting up very early for a day of skiing at the Cardrona ski resort. We were accompanied by two friends who we met in Australia and have met up with a number of times since. We booked onto a group lesson in the morning as neither of us have skied for a very long time (Katie has skied at the Tamworth snowdome and I skied once in China on fake snow about 10 years ago). Sep 29, 2010 - Cardrona

We drove first thing in the morning to the ski resort of Cardrona about 15km away. We came off the main road and a sign said snow chains recommeded, we stopped looked at each other and decided to risk it, as we thought the ski resort would not be that far up the mountain. The drive was off road again and seemed to last forever we would have turned round and gone back but the road was not big enough ha.
