Oct 22, 2017 - Auckland and Mount Taranaki (Egmont)

Another busy couple of weekends this month, making the most of the little time I have left in this beautiful country. Last weekend I popped back up to Auckand to see "Me first and the gimme gimmes" which was probably one of the best shows i've see in ages. The venue was pretty small and the crowd was such good fun and so friendly. Have definitely enjoyed the atmosphere at the live music things i've been to here, much more relaxed than things in the UK. Also took the opportunity whist up in Auckland to try a Giappo's ice-cream which is more...

May 16, 2006 - Cows, volcanos and surfing at Taranaki

The Lonely Planet describes Mount Taranaki/Egmont as the following: "The Taranki region is dominated by the massive cone of 2518m Taranaki, a dormant volcano that looks remarkably like Japan's Mount Fuji or the Philippines' Mayon." Apparently it erupted 350 years ago spreading lava flows down to the Tasman Sea below. It's a unique spot where if you are standing one way you see the fantastic snow capped volcano and if you turn around 180o you see the huge waves crashing in on black sandy beaches along what is known as the "Surf Highway" #45....

Mar 8, 2006 - mount egmont

Oct 31, 2005 - Rock on the Neo Rockers

Getting a hire car is always a bit of a lottery - you book it in advance and when you collect you might get upgraded because all the mid-sizes are in North Palmerston, or the windows don't work from overuse. We've been relatively lucky with our car - a Toyota Starlet (to have your product placed in this blog, hit the guestbook and make a donation to our Swiss bank account) that must be rhyming slang for Harlot. It's a zippy little thing that parks on a halved kiwifruit and handles like a spry tui bird. If it had one fault it would be that...

After trecking through dense woodland up hill all the way and having to climb over...

Oct 30, 2005 - Oakura

The journey down to Oakura was another beautiful one, We booked into another campsite right on the beach! Great for the kids! The town was very small, a petrol station, small supermarket, giftshop and surf shop( with the biggest board in the world outside) what more do you need. The guy's in the surfshop said Chris could use any of there boards, the only thing was the swell came in on the sunday and the shop was closed, looked really good as well best surf so far, chris and the children went in for a swim and chris left his sunnies on his...

Oct 29, 2005 - Egmont National Park

Hello everyone Well after a beautiful drive down the west coast we arrived in New Plymouth. Home to the famous cone shaped volcano Mount Taranaki (famous in Tom Cruise's Last Samurai). We were blown away with the scenery on the drive down and I was driving against the clock as we had spotted a micro brewery on route and thought it would be a perfect place to pick up a couple of beers to have with dinner. However much to Tim's disapointment it was not to be, as the guy had literally shut up shop just before we arrived. (I was not impressed:...

Oct 21, 2005 - Wellington - Stratford

We formed our first impressions of travel on the North Island today. The roads are definately busier especially since it's the start of Labour Day long weekend here in NZ, and there are a lot less pullouts to stop and have lunch. As a result, we drove for hours before taking a 12km detour from the main road for lunch. Lucky for us, this picnic spot was right next to a beach. So we enjoyed another picturesque lunch spot before continuing northeast to Stratford and the base of the volcano Mt.Egmont (which bears a striking resemblance to...

Dec 31, 2004 - Happy New Year!!

Howdy folks! Well, we spent the day getting ready for the night's festivities. i finally got my hair cut and coloured again, YAY!, which made me feel slightly more normal again! ;-) When I got back, we all got stuck into things. We tieded (that spelling doesn't look right, but it doesn't look right any other way I try either!!!! answers on a postcard too.......) up the house and the garden. Me and Anna mowed the lawns and devised a pitch and putt game between us. By the way, Anna is only four, but she's like my god daughter, Olivia, who's...

Dec 23, 2004 - Xmas eve and eve

Kia Ora! Well, on xmas eve's eve, I met up with Helen and her friends for food and a couple of drinks at a work colleague's flat warming. V amusing. They had that singstar on and the peeps who had had a few too many were on there battling it out amongst themselves for who could hit the most bum notes!! T-hee! Oh, how I laughed. Helen left early to go and surprise Dave, her new beau, in Hawera, and I left a lil later, finished packing and then drove up to meet them at Bulls - halfway between Hawera and Welly - the next morning. When we got...
