We camped beside the sea at Raglan, a lovely little village by the sea. The next morning after breakfast we drove the coastal road to Kawhia. We drove around the amazingly green rolling hills, passed several gorgeous beaches and scared many poor sheep with our big orange machine! We had hoped that there might be some surfing to be had as this region is famous for it but the surf schools don't go out on a rainy Wednesday in winter for some reason so there were no boards to rent. Und jetzt bin ich da, in Waitomo. Unterwegs erzaehlte uns der 'chatty' driver im Bus einiges ueber die Landschaft durch die wir fuhren. Bevor die Europaer kamen bestand Neuseeland aus 95% Wald - vorallem hier im Norden sehr tropisch mit vielen Farnen und jahrhunderte alten hohen Tropenbaeumen. Heute sind noch ca. 35% uebrig und viele Waelder davon werden jetzt mit Naturschutzparks geschuetzt denn fast der ganze alte Bestand an Tropenholz wurde abgeroded, d.h. der Wald ist zwar immer noch sehr dicht aber hauptsaechlich voller Busch- und...

JG Visited Waitomo glow worm caves which are,(wait for it...) full of glow-worms! All you can see and thousands of really tiny blue lights all over the top of the caves, quite impressive. Loads of stalagmites and stalacites - cool! Beautiful area. No photies 'cause not allowed, so bought a few postcards !

Thurs 2/9 Cloudy/Sunny/Showery Mighty tired this morning, and still no sign of Jay when I got up!! The rain has stopped, but the sky is very grey! On the bus now heading south to Waitomo. Saw Nick & Neil fromt he bar as I walked for the bus, they were just coming home from last nights session - both very drunk! We had a group hug - no mean feat with my back pack, and they staggered off to bed - the joys of youth!
