Mar 9, 2016 - Day 6 Bay of Islands to Pukenui and Houhora Heads

Day 6 began with a heavy dew and coolish temperature at Pagoda Lodge, but it soon warmed up as it has every morning in the subtropical Northland. We fruit for breakfast then into town for the obligatory coffee and blueberry muffin ( shared) before heading off for Houhora Heads on our way to Cape Reinga. Strangely it was drizzling. First precipitation we have seen. Stopped in at Matauri Bay on the advice of our host at Pagoda Lodge. Lovely beach but we had to keep moving. Next we visited Whangaroa Harbour, a really quaint fishing village...

Nov 22, 2013 - Trip inland into Broken Hills to view the old gold mining relics

After a cold night it was a beautiful sunny day and very hot. We climbed to yet another lookout up a poorly maintained tramping track which required quite a bit of scrambling but the path down was easier and very interesting. The lookout was getting overgrown by trees but the scenery was very different from the views we had been used to seeing of the coastline. Evidently the now pine covered hillsides were kauri tree covered in the 1800's but extensive logging removed it all. What a shame. They have however left a small strip of native...
