The road from the West Coast takes us through winding valleys of untouched forest, over the Southern Alps via the Haast Pass, and quite abruptly into the plains of Central Otago. We're in the land of huge cold glacial lakes, and when we stop at the town of Wanaka I'm smitten. It's a small lakeside town that services the ski areas in season, and has striking views across to mountains which were used as the setting for the second LOTR film. I'm not sure if it's the beautiful autumn day that stirs me, or just the fact I've been stuck on a bus...
