Apr 2, 2019 - Hello April!

You’ve heard the old saying “April showers bring May flowers.” Well, maybe that saying is true. However, here in Benson, what we know is true is that for some RVers, April 1st is the start of the migration to their stick houses in the northern regions of the country. Many Canadians who have been in the states for several months also start heading back home primarily to keep their provincial health insurance. Did you know that health insurance coverage varies between the provincial provinces? So, you might ask, what are we doing and when...

Mar 11, 2019 - The Long Story of Planning our Trip Abroad

(Art writing) In our last blog in February, we mentioned that we were planning on a trip to Spain in the fall. Since we calculated that we would only need about 1 ½ months in Spain, we decided to extend our European trip. We figured that the cost, time and effort to get to Europe warranted spending as much time once we were there. Our first thoughts were to go to Greece but we nixed that because we did not want to rent a car and public transportation would be difficult at best. Our second thought was to add Toulouse, France to our Spain...

Feb 11, 2019 - Down By the River Bed & Breakfast, St. Johns, AZ

We resumed our journey, after the blow out, driving west on I-10. After passing through El Paso,TX we entered into New Mexico. Passing through Las Cruces, Deming, and Lordsburg, we entered Arizona. We continued west on I-10 passing through Bowie, Wilcox and to Benson, where we left I-10 to drive south on Highway 80 to St. Johns, AZ. We turned off of Hwy 80 onto South Apache Powder Road. This road turned into a dirt/gravel road. After a few miles we arrived at our lodging for the next three nights: Down By the River Bed & Breakfast. The...

Feb 4, 2019 - Procrastinate

pro•cras•ti•nate: /prəˈkrastəˌnāt/ Verb: delay or postpone action; put off doing something. Synonyms: delay, put off doing something, postpone action, defer action, use delaying tactics, stall, dally, drag one's feet, take one's time. Yep, I have been procrastinating on writing in my blog. I could list a few reasons for the month-long gap between journal entries like we’re not traveling right now but sitting in one place so there isn’t much that is new to write about; we’ve been distracted by any number of things going on in the park or...

Jan 14, 2019 - Family, new friends and old friends.

Hi all. Writing tonight from Kartchner Cave State Park in Arizona. Tomorrow we plan to visit the cave here. Just want to keep you in suspense for our next blog entry. Since our last post we have been in several locations around San Diego and traveled back to Orlando for 10 days over Christmas. Thursday we entered Arizona. Yesterday we got back on the trails at this beautiful state park. We have both missed frolicking through uncharted territory. In San Diego we RV'd at the Elks Club in Oceanside and Vista and stayed at the Del Mar beach on...

Jan 2, 2019 - Let It Snow...Let It Snow

“Oh the weather outside is frightful” might be the lyrics to a Christmas carol but it could also be used to described the weather conditions we saw today when we woke up. Since we’ve been coming to the park, this is the first time we have seen this kind of weather. It is almost like we made a wrong turn after our three week trip into Tucson. We’ll be looking forward to warmer temperatures. In the meantime, we can drown our sorrows at the appropriately named “Polar Bear Party” on Thursday. It is a park fundraiser. The park collects money and...

Jan 1, 2019 - Benson AZ / Lordsburg NM

As we prepared to travel to Lordsburg New Mexico, we realized that we were going to see some snow there overnight. It would be cold getting there and we might see some light rain, but definitely snow overnight and into the next morning. The prediction was for 4-6 inches! I will not travel when snow is falling or if the roads aren't clean, so one option would be to stay over an extra day and wait out the storm. Janet was very worried about slippery conditions. Lordsburg is going to get snow starting at about 2-3 AM and continue for about 12...

Dec 23, 2018 - Back in Benson

We’re back at our lot in Benson after our three week getaway in nearby Tucson. Our park is in full swing for the holidays. Besides the clubhouse, many of the casitas and RVs are also elaborately decorated. The Christmas laser lights are more popular this year since they have come down quite a bit in price. However, you won’t find any decorations on our lot – can you say BAH-HUMBUG. Right now, we don’t have any other getaways scheduled. We’ll use the quiet time during the holidays to start to plan our trips for next year which could include...

Dec 16, 2018 - Kartchner Caverns State Park (12/14 - 12/16/18)

On our way to Kartchner Caverns State Park, I spotted a herd of Pronghorn lounging out in the desert. I had been looking for wildlife for so long and was finally rewarded!! Anyway we arrived at Kartchner to find it almost empty. We stayed here before and it was difficult to get in. I keep forgetting that we are traveling much earlier this year, we are usually out here in late January, early February. We stayed in site #54 which was an end site. We had a great view into the park and of the mountains surrounding it. After we got set up and...

Nov 23, 2018 - Happy (belated) Thanksgiving

Art and I hope you had a great Thanksgiving. Our park had its usual potluck but this year we were anti-social and hung out at home. I cooked lasagna, key lime pie and fudge cookies which turned out delicious. We’ve been in the park for just about a month now. Events are in full swing – music, BBQs, potlucks, movie night, etc. However, it is time for us to do a short road trip. We won’t be going far – just to the Tucson area. We’ll spend some time at Catalina State Park and Gilbert Ray County Park where we’ll do a bit of hiking. To satisfy...

Nov 4, 2018 - Recap of our Travels

Well it has certainly been a different year for us since we started RVing eleven years ago. We left Benson on May 1st for our nine week trip to Europe and returned on July 6th. Our last trip overseas was to Hungary back in 2005 and, as I mentioned in previous blogs, a lot has changed since then. Plus, when we returned to Benson in July it was our first time in the desert in the middle of summer. Whew, it was hot. We quickly left Benson on July 10th. We stayed closer to Arizona and you’ll see a recap of our RV travels below. Trip Beginning:...
