Nov 14, 2020 - COVID Humor

The Internet continues to be filled with COVID jokes and humorous memes. Some of it is certainly dark humor while others get you to laugh at a time when it might be hard to do so. The jokes might even lighten the mood. Of course, people who perceive their risk of infection or have suffered directly from the virus might be adverse to the humor. However, for us, we view these jokes as a coping mechanism especially now that we are experiencing an upswing in cases. We are definitely missing all the cultural activities that would normally be...

Nov 7, 2020 - Let's Get the Story Right!

With Biden-Harris winning the Presidential election, today’s headlines on Kamala Harris are interesting. The CBS headline reads “Kamala Harris makes history as the first Black woman vice president.” The ABC news headline reads “Kamala Harris set to make history as first woman of color to be vice president.” Both of these headlines are wrong, wrong, wrong! The Business Insider article got it right: “Kamala Harris makes history as the FIRST WOMAN vice-president-elect.” The way I read the CBS and ABC headlines you’d think that the United...

Nov 4, 2020 - Recap of 2020 Travels

Here is a recap of our 2020 travels – nearly five months of travel in our small motorhome. It was certainly a different year for us for many reasons but, overall, the trip worked out better than we expected. Since we didn’t have a tow car, we did spend quite a bit of time bicycling. The cities/towns we stayed at were bike friendly so that was good. In the process, we both lost nearly 10 pounds each without trying!! We’re not sure what to expect next year and are working on what we want to do and where we want to go. Stay tuned. Recap of...

Oct 25, 2020 - Back in Benson

We are back at our lot in Benson. We’ve been here just shy of two weeks. This year it was weird coming back. It was the first year we’ve left our fifth year on the lot and were wondering how “Lizzie” would do in the extreme temperatures over the five months we were on the road. Well, the slides came out with no problem, we didn’t have any rodent infestation, and there were no leaks from the little rain that fell in the area. Art did have to replace the kitchen faucet since the faucet turned into a geyser when he turned on the water. Of...

Oct 20, 2020 - Landed!

10/20 We arrived at our park in Benson yesterday around noon. It was mid-90s yesterday. Way too warm for us but it will cool down in a few days. The next several days will be unloading, putting things away and doing some organizing in the casita. It will be good to see our friends here and we may just have to visit the Horseshoe and Wild Dogs. It was nice to see “the kids” in Deming. Adobe Deli was great (as usual) Saturday night, not so much on Sunday night. Our order got mixed up, soup was good but very late in coming and my steak was...

May 22, 2020 - Staying Sane (sort of) while staying in place

We are still at our site in Benson. We’ve been here for nearly seven months now and are getting bored with just sitting in one place. Plus, we’ve had unseasonably high temperatures for the last few weeks with many days with temperatures reaching above 100 degrees. I just can’t bear those temperatures. We spend most afternoons in the air-conditioned clubhouse reading or surfing the web, playing pool or table tennis. The good news is that some states are starting to lift their stay-at-home orders. After nearly 6 weeks of a stay-at-home order...

Apr 22, 2020 - Plant-demic Tour

I’ve been reading about some of the creative things people are doing to make the most of their stay-at-home time. This weekend the volunteers on the landscaping committee hosted what they called a Plantdemic Tour. Nearly all of the landscaping in the park is maintained by volunteers. Not only do they do the routine landscaping maintenance, but the committee has created a number of ‘pocket parks’ throughout the park. The Plantdemic Tour was organized not only to showcase their efforts but to encourage people to get outside and take...

Apr 14, 2020 - Lockdown and a New Purchase

We are still “hunkered” down here in Benson. Normally, most of the leaseholders would already be moving on to either their stick houses or beginning their travels for the season. Not this year; people are staying in place. There are about 307 sites in the park. Right now, there are 206 leaseholders still in the park along with 66 renters. Like other RV parks in the area, the park closed its sites to non-leaseholders at the beginning of the month. We are trying to keep positive during this time. With little to do and not much to look...

Mar 29, 2020 - The Forgotten Flu

Here in Benson, we have two supermarkets – a Walmart and a Safeway. Previously, when going through the checkout lane, we’ve been asked “Did you find everything you needed?” When we went shopping this past week, we both joked with the cashier that we weren’t asked that common question. She then told us the new question they ask is “Did you find everything you can get?” That question is more appropriate during these times. With the Corona virus, shelves in both stores are bare, and I mean bare, empty, nada, nothing! No eggs, no butter, no...

Mar 22, 2020 - Trip Interrupted

What a difference a week makes! In my last blog just 10 days ago, we were deciding whether to continue with our trip to Europe or to cancel. With travel restrictions in place to many European countries and lockdowns in Spain and France, the decision has already been made for us. We’re obviously not going. It is our second attempt for a trip to Spain and I’m thinking it just wasn’t meant for us to visit there. So now we’re hanging out in the SKP Park in Benson. Any remaining activities in the park such as music events, dinners, potlucks and...

Mar 12, 2020 - Should I Stay or Should I Go Now...

Some of you might remember a song from the late 1970s by a British punk group called “The Clash.” One line in the song was “Should I stay or should I go now/If I go there could be trouble…” Well, that line could describe how we are feeling about our upcoming trip in early April to Europe. I suppose you can guess that the Corona virus, now classified a pandemic by WHO, is the cause of our uncertainty about going on the trip. We are both in good health so our concerns aren’t about contracting the virus. Rather, we don’t want our trip to be...

Feb 24, 2020 - Spring Travel Plans

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome onboard Flight DL2789 with service from Tucson to Istanbul. Yep, we’ve finalized part of our plans for this spring. That type of airline announcement is one that we’ll hear in April as we board the plane for our trip to Europe. We’ll first fly into Istanbul where we’ll spend a week. We’ve spent a couple of days in Istanbul 25 years ago but I am sure so much has changed. Then, a four-hour flight will take us to Malaga, Spain. That is our kickoff point for our travels North through Spain. We have stops planned in...
