Jul 23, 2019 - Day 68 - Solomons Navy Rec Center, Solomons, MD

It stops raining just long enough for LJ and I to get a good walk in this morning. At the dog run, the disabled vet whose dog pulls him in his wheelchair is there, sans wheelchair. LJ and his dog get a few good sprints in, which is great for LJ. He's going to be stuck in the RV for most of the day. We're back at the funeral home by 8:30 for our final goodbye to Charlie and the procession to the church. By this time, it's pouring rain, which fits the somber mood. About 9:15, everyone but the pall bearers head to our cars to get ready for...

Jul 22, 2019 - Day 67 - Solomons Navy Rec Center, Solomons, MD

It's still brutally hot and muggy this morning. The heat wave is supposed to break tonight, but it's dug in its heels so far. After the morning walk, my primary objective is to find a place to get the oil in the RV changed before we head west on Wednesday. I normally like to change the oil every 5K miles. Conventional wisdom says it's ok to go to 7.5K if you use full synthetic (which I do). Before the detour back to the east coast, we were going to hit that 7.5K limit about the time we returned to Tucson. Now we're going to be way over and...

Jul 21, 2019 - Day 66 - Solomons Navy Rec Center, Solomons, MD

The day starts off on a sour note. I forgot to mention in yesterday's blog that somewhere during the roller coaster ride through the mountains of western Maryland (and West Virginia and Pennsylvania), we hit a particularly sharp curve. Suddenly, there was a really loud crash from the back of the RV. My first thought was that maybe the refrigerator door lock had failed and the doors had swung open. Wendy heads back to investigate, and after several minutes returns and reports that the Keurig coffee maker had slid off the counter and crashed...

Jul 20, 2019 - Day 65 - Solomons Navy Rec Center, Solomons, MD

With the time change, LJ and I are both a little slow getting started, plus it's so dang hot and humid neither one of us want to move much. The park actually has a decent sized dog run, and LJ takes a couple of laps at high speed in there before deciding to revert to slow motion. We're ready to move out about 7:45 but first we have to hook up the truck. In a stroke of incredible fortune, I had somehow remembered yesterday morning that having the truck in tow continuously for days puts a real drain on the battery. So before we left Iowa...

Jun 24, 2019 - Day 39 - Solomons Navy Rec Center, Solomons, MD

After a long day yesterday, even LJ sleeps in this morning. It's almost 8am before he decides to grace us with his presence. It's our last full day in Southern Maryland and the plan is to make the rounds and say our goodbyes to family in the area. By the time we get our act together it's almost noon, so we order take out from Outback (that has an odd ring to it) and go to Steve and Kay's. They are having their living room floor torn out and replaced, so it's pretty crazy. To avoid the construction, we have lunch on the porch where Brandi...

Jun 23, 2019 - Day 38 - Solomons Navy Rec Center, Solomons, MD

Another gorgeous morning. Pretty soon I may have nothing to complain about. After church we return to The Front Porch in Leonardtown for their brunch and Bloody Mary's. Our friend Scott joins us there. He can use the break. He and his wife Nancy have been shuttling up to Baltimore and back all weekend. Their niece is having severe medical isuess and they've been helping out. After brunch we head back to the RV. It's such a beautiful day, I can't pass up a chance to play golf, so I drop Wendy and LJ at her sister in laws and I head to the...

Jun 22, 2019 - Day 37 - Solomons Navy Rec Center, Solomons, MD

Hard to believe, but the weather is REALLY nice for a second day in a row. Blue skies and comfortable temp with just a hint of a breeze. Be still my heart. The entire hoard of children and grandchildren arrive about 1030 and we all head to Solomons for an early lunch. We get to The Lighthouse just as it opens, and it's a good thing. With such perfect weather, we know the whole area will be swarming with people in no time. But we get a perfect table for 11 out on their deck and have a great lunch. All too soon it's time to say goodbye to...

Jun 21, 2019 - Day 36 - Solomons Navy Rec Center, Solomons, MD

While it was raining when we went to sleep last night, it didn't seem that heavy or prolonged. So I'm very surprised to find the space outside our entrance door completely flooded again. It's pretty early and I have not had my first sip of coffee, so I just shrug and LJ and I tip toe to the back of the pad to escape the worst of the swamp. Approaching an intersection on our way to the dog park, a guy in a wheelchair zips by on the cross street ahead. He's being pulled at a pretty high speed by a good sized service dog - some sort of lab...

Jun 20, 2019 - Day 35 - Solomons Navy Rec Center, Solomons, MD

LJ and I are up early for our morning walk. The dismal forecast has failed to materialize for once. We got no rain yesterday and it looks pretty promising for today as well. Those weather guys know nothing. We get back from our walk right around 7 and are greeted with a chorus of weed-whackers. Three or four workers have descended on our area with really noisy gas powered whackers and are trimming around each pad. I know it has to be done, but at 7am??? Skip picks me up for golf at 8:15 and I actually play a decent round - first time since...

Jun 19, 2019 - Day 34 - Solomons Navy Rec Center, Solomons, MD

With the forecast for a 75% chance of rain all day, I decide to pass on an invitation to play golf with our friend Skip. Instead, we head over in the late morning to the hotel where Shelli and her family are staying. We hang out for a while and then head to lunch at a nearby Mexican restaurant. Food was really good and portions so big that we have plenty of leftovers. After lunch, the plan is for me to head back to the RV with our leftovers to hang out with LJ while everybody else heads for the mall. At the last minute, Cooper (Shelli's 12...

Jun 18, 2019 - Day 33 - Solomons Navy Rec Center, Solomons, MD

After another night of torrential rain, Camp Swampy (aka Solomons Rec Center) is slowly drying out as LJ and I take our morning walk. We've discovered over the last year of RV-ing that, for reasons only he can explain, once LJ discovers a dog run, that's pretty much the only place he will reliably poop. So now every time we walk him at Solomons, the route never varies much. We always end up at the dog run. He goes inside, poops, and then immediately wants out of the dog run. Go figure. This morning there's a slight deviation; as soon as he...

Jun 17, 2019 - Day 32 - Solomons Navy Rec Center, Solomons, MD

After all the excitement last night at our friend's house, I figure LJ will sleep in this morning so I don't wake him up as I get ready for another early golf game. But he's having none of it, and insists on a walk. I get him out briefly and then head for the rec center entrance where Skip picks me up and off we go to Breton Bay. It's a beautiful morning for golf, and although I really play poorly, I can't complain (well, I can. But I'll leave that for another day). After the round, Skip drops me off at Steve and Kay's. Wendy and LJ are...
