We headed off the beaten track to the Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument. These ruins are from as far back as 7000 years ago when the Pueblo natives developed a agricultural lifestyle and built communal living complexes. The in the 1500s the Spainish friars came and established large mission churches near the pueblo buildings. They were abandoned in 1670s due to drought,epidemics and cultural conflict.
