Oct 13, 2019 - Balloons Flew Away

Today is the last day of the Albuquerque International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta. The balloons are in the air and flying away. Judy and I had made plans to go one day this week, clothes were laid out, camera batteries were charged and alarm was set to leave at 4 AM. The alarm went off, I got up and asked Judy if she really wanted to go or just stay in bed. It didn't take long for her to answer so we just crawled back under the covers. As it turned out it was a good thing we did because there was too much of a breeze on the field and aloft so...

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

Sep 20, 2019 - We're Still Alive but Things Changed

I'm so sorry that I've not posted all summer here but Judy and I were either being "camphosts" at the State Park or out viewing homes that we thought we would maybe be interested in buying. At the location of the state park we were either driving a hour south to view homes or two hours north, sometimes 3 hours north. That went on for a couple months until we viewed one that Judy felt was right. I had to rely on her because all the housed seemed OK to me. We ended up buying a very nice above average manufactured home in the retirement...

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

Oct 12, 2018 - Time to Go

It was time to move on today, and Trixie managed to go into hiding on top of the top bed in the back before we even had our coffee. How does she know!? We actually had to hook up the trailer and move it forward a few feet for her to scamper down and head for her spot under the covers. Then I was able to drag her out to put her in her carrier for the trip. We had such a good time here, visiting and eating and watching the balloons at Balloon Fiesta on the TV. Hard to leave, but we will see them again when they host for us in Pagosa next...

Oct 11, 2018 - Ruins

Bo was going to Mountainair to get a haircut today, so it was suggested we go with and would drive over to Quarai, part of the Salinas Pueblo Missions ruins. Last time we were here we visited the ruins at Abo. All of these were quite large, and although only a small part of the surrounding pueblo has been excavated, the missions themselves were impressive. The one here at Quarai features the most complete Salinas church. It was interesting to imagine what it would have been like to live here. We all enjoyed the ¾ mile loop around the ruins,...

Oct 10, 2018 - Toby?

I forgot to mention that Bo and Olinda have a new dog, a cute and rambunctious Catahoula mix that is a year old; still very much a puppy and strong as an ox. They had a knotted dog rope on spring that was hung from a tall tree. That crazy dog spent hours jumping for the rope! He also loved to chew, and immediately chewed my rubber door mat. It now has some decorative scalloped edges. Anyway, everything was fair game, including our rubber electrical cord. Even with a shock collar, it was impossible to catch him every time he went for the...

Oct 9, 2018 - Lavender Fields

Olinda and I began plotting right away. The last time we visited, we planned a trip on the Rail Runner from Belen to Santa Fe and back. This time we wanted to go to the Purple Adobe Lavender farm near Abiquiu. Don and I had gone there a couple of years ago, but Olinda really wanted to see it. We were supposed to meet Bo for lunch in Albuquerque after he attended a meeting. Our plan was to drive to see the lavender then stop to eat on our way home. We rationalized that by the huge breakfast of eggs, biscuits and gravy Olinda fixed....

Oct 8, 2018 - Bo and Olinda

Well, it is Monday and time to leave here as we head further south. Our first stop is Belen, only about 60 miles south of Albuquerque, so a short travel day. Trixie was not impressed, however, since anytime we get ready to travel she hides under the covers. We have stayed with friends Bo and Olinda before, and Don was looking forward to being spoiled by her cooking. I was looking forward to having time to visit, since we did not have much time when we saw them in the campground in Pagosa.

Oct 17, 2016 - Bo and Olinda

Next stop was Belen, NM to visit our friends Bo and Olinda. They were hosts for us at the horse campground in Pagosa. Since they live in a semi-rural area, they had room for us to park in their yard. After getting set up, they took us on a tour of their town, which did not take very long, but was really interesting. We visited the Harvey House museum at the train station. A fascinating bit of history for sure! And we discovered that Belen is a hub for train traffic in the area, with many tracks and a round house. We enjoyed watching the...

Mon, 12 Oct: A short drive, and Full Hookups... After two full weeks boondocking on the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta RV grounds we finally rolled wheels. The RV grounds officially closed at noon so vacating was not an option. We arose when we wanted to without the noise of shuttle buses, helicopters, police sirens, and the other noises we've associated with the fiesta. Our tea was enjoyed at our usual relaxed pace, as was breakfast. Then we started the chores of getting the coach ready for the road following two weeks parked. Engine oil, tire...

2015 Travels

Oct 7, 2012 - Day 100

Found out that the "Mass Ascension" yesterday was cancelled due to high winds. Since it and today's event were to occur about 0545, we did not get up to see it. We heard late this afternoon that this morning's "Mass Ascension" did get airborne. Mass Ascension is where as many as possible of the hot air balloons inflate and get airborne. Some of the 'shape' balloons, like the Wells Fargo Stagecoach, did not go due a requirement of lower winds. There are two types of balloons; gas balloons and hot air balloons. Gas balloons are filled with...

Oct 6, 2012 - Day 99

Today was a another fairly quiet day. This afternoon we drove up to Albuquerque to visit my cousin Ray and his wife, Terri. Had a very nice visit. The winds were too strong this morning for the Balloon Fiesta Mass Ascencion. We are planning to go tomorrow afternoon and catch the evening balloon glow.

Oct 4, 2012 - Day 97

We left the Farmington area this morning to drive over to Bloomfield and pick up US-550 and head south, passing Angel Peak National Recreation Site and the cities of Cuba, San Ysidro and Bernalillo to reach I-25 heading towards Albuquerque. We continued south on I-25 to the city of Belen, about 30 miles, and the La Mirada RV Park. We chose this park based on our previous visit 2 years ago and the fact that it is close to my cousin. This evening we drove over to my cousin Rik's house for a visit with him and his sister, Chris.
