Sep 12, 2019 - Clayton sp

We got up early and headed back into Taos to eat some more mexican food. We stopped at the Gaudalajara grill where we've eaten before on other trips. Bill had the shrimp maztalan and o had a chicken enchilada with red sauce. Both were excellent! On to downtown to buy t-shirts and then we were on our way home. We stopped at Clayton lake so which was in the middle of nowhere near the Tx/Ok border. We had a great site looking down at the lake. We took a hike to see the dinosaur tracks on the far side of the lake. There were lots of tracks that...

May 9, 2019 - On Santa Fe Trail

Headed east, we are behind the bad weather, aimed at Dodge City today. Pioneers must have been bored by the miles of desolate prairie in these parts. We went 220 miles through it yesterday on Rt 412/56 and saw perhaps a dozen ranches, but hundreds of cows, and surprisingly few cars .

Sep 20, 2017 - Day 22 - Coyote Keeth RV Park, NM

Dang dog got me up at 0430 this morning to go out. Then again at 0630. I don't think he really had to go. Just too much pent up energy after driving all day. If they ever finish this RV park (Hutchinson KS), it will be really nice. They're building a small lake and maybe another section of RV sites. The site we were in was pretty level, but most of the others have a pretty severe slope that I would not like to park on. Park has some REALLY small cottages available as well as the RV sites. Very cute cottages that can't be 500 sq feet, but...

Jun 10, 2014 - On to Estes Park

Well last night didn't go too well. CJ woke me out of a sound sleep twice to take her out. Since the low was in the 40s, I had to scrounge for jeans and a sweatshirt in the dark. Not fun. Yes I took it on myself both times because Stan has a Sinus Infection (this makes two years in a row to start a trip with antibiotics) More fun. Today has not been much better. We are still having to stop for the dog in addition to walking her every time we stop for fuel. The good thing though is there is little to no wind today so we are making much...

Going North 2014

Sep 23, 2013 - Clayton, NM

Again, we get a good night’s sleep in spite of the trains. I here John chuckle as the 5:30 AM goes through. We head to town for breakfast and then back to the park. Today is a travel day. It is time to get out of Dodge. We head south to Route 54. We pass by the Dalton Gang Hideout. We decide it is closed. We do not really want to stop this soon. When we need a break, we see a bridge. We see a roadside rest area. Perfect! We stretch our legs and I read some Kansas history. The bridge is the Samson of the Cimarron. We continue to Liberal, KS...

Aug 11, 2013 - Clayton, New Mexico

We had a good time at the four day RV Rally in Pueblo, CO. We were kept busy with attending seminars, looking at the vendor's wares, eating lots of food, enjoying the entertainment and had time to spend with old and new friends. We left Pueblo on the 5th and headed for Alamosa,CO to meet up with my favorite cousin and his wife, Hank & Pat, to camp together for several days. In the five days we had with them, we all toured the area and had some great visiting times. The Great Sand Dunes Nat’l Park was within a short driving distance. These...

Aug 25, 2012 - Clayton, NM

Saturday morning we left for Clayton, NM. We took I-25 south until we passed through the mountain community of Raton and then we turned onto US 87. A VERY windy US 87! It was a rough drive for a while and then the winds finally calmed down. Clayton wasn’t much of a town, but that was okay, as it was only a one night stop. We had dinner at home and just relaxed at the RV Park…the only RV park in town. By the evening, the RV park was pretty full, as we weren’t the only ones who were staying here over night. Tomorrow… on to Amarillo for one...

May 27, 2012 - Nice drive

Tecolote Cafe, awesome breakfast place in Santa Fe! We will be back for more sometime! While in town, we took the opportunity to shop Whole Foods and Trader Joe's, and then discovered sand was lodged by the glass and was scratching the window. So, we stopped to wash the car. We decided to drive part of the high road to Taos and then head for Las Vegas. A front had blown through so the sky was clear, heat was gone, but the wind was still high and it was to get to 38 degrees by morning, so at Las Vegas we decided to keep going and stay in a...

Nov 10, 2011 - Farewell Colorado, Hello New Mexico!

So we left Denver day before yesterday and we are now in Amarillo Texas! Much warmer here...like it's not going to freeze tonight! Yay! We are on a terrible wifi connection so I'm having a bad time trying to add pictures to this edition of MyTripJournal so am going to sign off for tonight. Maybe tomorrow! Now settled in Fort Worth so I can catch up on the past few days of travel. We traveled from Denver south on Interstate 25 Colorado Springs, Pueblo then into New Mexico at Raton. The terrain is rolling plains with mountains off to the...

On The Road Again!

May 25, 2010 - A sad day for us

We had a long, and sad day today. Started out from Kaw City, OK at 7:00 AM. About 11:30 A Robert got a call from Celeste letting us know that her brother, George, had passed away. We all knew George from our campground...a sweet guy that we will miss so much. Our thoughts and prayers go to Celeste & Robert and their family. Robert had joined us late yesterday after driving Celeste to the Witchataw (sp?) airport in the afternoon. He is staying with us and Celeste will catch up when possible. We ran into heavy rain early this morning but...

May 23, 2010 - Tornado on the Ground

We had some excitement on Sunday night while we were in Clayton, NM that I will never forget. Clayton is a small town near the Oklahoma panhandle and not far from Kansas. In the late afternoon the sky became very dark and the wind picked up. A tornado watch was announced for the area. I looked on a weather site on the internet at the radar and sure enough there were storm cells lined up to the south of us and headed our way. I called the campground office and the man who answered the phone said that the danger was to the east of us, but,...

May 23, 2010 - Last Stop in New Mexico

This is our last day in New Mexico. We are in the small town of Clayton, located in the northeast corner of the state. Last fall we were in Southern New Mexico and for the past two weeks we have been in Northern New Mexico so we feel like we have been in most parts of the state. Neither of us had been in New Mexico and it is been fun to visit with lots to see and do from natural beauty to history to the arts. Clayton was founded in 1888 when the railroad came through this way. It was and still is cattle country. We had lunch at a local...
