Oct 2, 2015 - Drive to Eagles Nest, NM

Woke up to heavy fog or maybe it was just the clouds...we’re so high on the ridge at 8200’. Waited for the clouds to lift. Raton Pass to Cimarron, NM and the St. James Hotel for lunch (53.7 mi, 1 hour) via I-25 S and US-64 W. The landscape on US-64 W was flat with fields of grassland and bushes dotted here and there…mountains to the right. Stopped at Colfax Tavern (locally called ‘Cold Beer’ because that’s the only sign) at the T of Hwy 505 and Hwy 64…a big red barn like building made of corrugated tin sitting all by itself on the left...

Jul 31, 2015 - Eagle Nest, New Mexico

After stops in Elk City, Amarillo and Santa Rosa, we arrived as scheduled in Eagle Nest, New Mexico on July 24. We found our cool weather and beautiful scenery as well. It's in the low 70's in the daytime and around 40 at night. Golden Eagle Campground in Eagle Nest is in a beautiful valley surrounded by mountains. We have a panoramic view in front of our RV. The park is crowded as all of them seem to be in this area, but we have a pull-thru that was easy to access. Our neighbors are from Oklahoma and Texas respectively and there are lots...

Sep 21, 2011 - More on Colorado Springs

9.0, 9.5, 10.0. Do those numbers sound familiar? I don’t know about you, but in the late 70s, 80s and 90s, I really enjoyed watching the televised coverage of the Olympic Games -particularly the gymnastics and figure skating. I remember the announcers would broadcast the scores while the Olympic hopeful anxiously stood by. While in Colorado Springs, we toured one of the few state-of-the-art U.S. Olympic Training complexes in America. This particular center had facilities for gymnastics, fencing, boxing, shooting, and swimming, just to name...

Aug 20, 2009 - Side Fishing Trip

After leaving Colorado Springs, Suanne and I decided to spend a few days in Eagle Nest New Mexico before returning home. We are both having second thoughts about returning but realize that we must do so. Before leaving town, Suanne decided that she would like to try her hand at fishing. Thus we stopped at Wal Mart and picked up a rod and reel for her. Upon arriving in Eagle Nest, we proceeded to get our licenses and head for the stream. Keeping in mind that Suanne had never fished and I had only done so a couple of times, it was like a...

On to Canada

Jul 15, 2009 - Eagle Nest, NM

Originally decided to go to Taos for a few days so off we go! Got to Taos and decided to pass. Headed north to Questa and decided to keep going. This is the Enchanted Circle, so we were waiting to be enchanted. Got to Red River and were more interested. Campgrounds looked a bit cramped so we decided to keep going. On our way east out of town, we saw a much better looking campground below us. Unfortunately, the next turn around was in Eagle Nest! And Eagle Nest looked fine to us! Stayed at the Golden Eagle RV Park. Pull through sites that...
