Jan 14, 2021 - Moderna COVID Vaccinations at CARE

Today Brookshire Brothers Pharmacy held a COVID vaccination clinic at CARE to give a free Moderna vaccination to all those who wanted it: residents, staff and volunteers. The pharmacist and his aide worked closely with our nurse, Judy, in getting it set up. They were very efficient, so the process went very smoothly. We were required to sit for about 30 minutes after the injections to make sure that there would be no reactions. I hardly felt the injection because their needle was so sharp. Other pharmacies in town were offering the...

Jan 11, 2021 - Farewell to Waymon Sinclair

Early this morning we lost our friend and fellow CARE resident, Waymon Sinclair, to complications from COVID-19. He had been having a very difficult battle with the virus, which had weakened his heart. He and Shirley have been here for several years and had regularly participated in our parties – dressed accordingly. Waymon is the fourth one of my acquaintances who has fallen victim to this horrible disease.

Jan 1, 2021 - Happy New Year!

Today dawned chilly but dry, a welcome change from the cold, rainy weather of yesterday. Not much is going on due to that infamous elephant in the room: COVID-19. I hope and pray that 2021 will bring better conditions around the world. I’m just thankful to be safe and healthy and to have such wonderful staff and volunteers at CARE.

Dec 31, 2020 - New Year’s Eve Party at CARE

Tonight the CARE volunteers hosted a little New Year’s Eve party for us in the multi-purpose room. It was nicely decorated and there were plenty of snacks and drinks. Brian Brandenburg told stories and sang some silly songs, accompanying himself on his ukulele. Judy Gauthier played her clarinet along with pre-recorded music and I accompanied Maureen Asper on the piano keyboard. There was a pretty good turnout in spite of the cold, rainy weather.

Dec 24, 2020 - Christmas Eve Activities

Tonight I went with Wayne and Beth Roberts to a candlelight service at Central Baptist Church. Afterwards, we drove to Pedigo Park to see the Christmas lights – my third time to do this. Every year the City of Livingston adds more lights, so it is a very pretty scene. Our last stop of the evening was at Jack in the Box for milkshakes (just what we needed to enhance our youthful figures, right?).

Dec 22, 2020 - Bingo Party at CARE

Right after lunch today, we went outside for a “golf cart” bingo party. Tables were set up for those of us who don’t have golf carts. The weather was perfect for such an activity. The prizes were donated by some of the healthcare providers in town. We played six games with three winners each time. The last game was a blackout. I won a game and received an insulated drinking glass and small tongs wrapped in a kitchen towel.

Dec 9, 2020 - Cheese-Tasting Party at CARE

This afternoon we had a special treat – a cheese-tasting party. Margaret Bouschon, a volunteer who had come here every November for several years, was unable to be with us this year. She always hosted a “Cheese Extravaganza” for us. Since she couldn’t be with us in person this time, she mailed us a box of cheeses – 27 varieties! She even included information concerning which crackers, olives, etc., were to be served with which cheeses. We were given a list of the cheeses in the order in which they were to be served. They were divided into...

Nov 11, 2020 - Visit from Carolyn Nottleson

Today Carolyn Nottleson came to have lunch with me. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, we had to eat in the garden. It was very pleasant out there, though, because of the perfect weather. She stayed until about 3:00 o’clock. Carolyn is staying in the Escapees Rainbow’s End RV Park for a few days and then she will head to Austin to visit her daughter and her family. She wants to be a CARE resident someday but wants to travel some more before coming here. Her RV has about 250,000 miles on it!

Oct 31, 2020 - COVID-19 Cases at CARE

Three of our CARE residents have just tested positive for COVID-19. Yikes!! We have tried to be very careful to follow CDC guidelines, so this news comes as a shock. For over a week now, I’ve been battling what I’m 99% sure is a major allergy attack. I’ve been taking Claritin-D but it hasn’t worked for me this time. I went to CVS today and had a consultation with the pharmacist. She told me that the drug loses its effectiveness if it is taken for too long a time and that I need to change to a different medication. She suggested Zyrtec and...

Oct 30, 2020 - Halloween Eve Party at CARE

This afternoon we had a Halloween Eve party in the CARE garden. The weather was absolutely perfect for such outdoor activities. We had snacks, music and games. Many of the people dressed up in costumes, some of which were pretty clever. The one that I thought was the cutest was Crystal Saulters as a queen bee.

Oct 22, 2020 - Volunteer Appreciation Party

Right after lunch today we had a special party to show our appreciation to several volunteer couples who have gone above and beyond in helping us since the COVID-19 pandemic “officially” began in March. They helped us in countless ways, including delivering all three meals to us for nearly three months at the beginning. They have stayed here much longer than volunteers usually do (from three to seven months) because other volunteers who had been scheduled to come during this time had to cancel. Now they are getting ready to hit the road...

Oct 20, 2020 - Visit with Paula D

Paula is here for a few days to take care of some business. She is camping in Lake Livingston State Park. She will head back to Birmingham, Alabama on Thursday, with a possible side trip along the Natchez Trace. This would be a good time for that trip because there should be lots of fall color. Today we met in Pedigo Park for a little picnic. The weather was ideal, with a gentle breeze and mild temperature. As usual, we had a very nice visit. I’m looking forward to her next visit.
